Ray and I started looking for land after we married and found the 23 acres that we now farm and live. Our idea of having fruit trees was to plant 5 plum trees (2004) so we could make some plum jelly. Well we planted those 5 trees and haven't stop planting yet (Feb 2010). We now have 1000 peach trees, 35 pear trees, 30 plum trees, and 1 acre of blackberries.
As Ray says, it's a fun project. It has and is a lot of work but it's wonderful to watch God's hand at work. To see nature at it's best, watch the bud swell, the buds break and the fruit form. It seems every year is a little bit different from the last. Keeping God in the center has been our ultimate goal and we give him all the glory for the wonderful fruit that has been grown.
Man planted....God grown....
enjoy looking at our pictures and hope we see you during the harvest season.
The beginning......
When we start this wonderful life adventure we had a few things we wanted to do. Our project was a quest to fulfill our dreams. We wanted to get back to the basics of life. And enjoy our autumn years being outside and watching trees grow and produce premium, sweet, and juicy fruit.
So the adventure began, we started out to plant a few things and then we wanted to visit an orchard to get some advice on the basics, how, what, where, when and who. We visited the Hamm orchard in Terrell( http://www.hamorchard.com/) and Mr. Hamm gave us some wonderful advise -- told us to join the Texas Fruit Growers Association (http://www.texasfruitgrowers.org/) and we then we were off. We decided the best thing to plant is peaches, some plums and some pears. We laid out rows and started to plow, disc and dig the holes.
We are breaking up the ground to start digging and planting.
We used the tractor to dig the holes. My job was to help the auger to dig a deep hold and to make sure it goes down deep enough.
We also decided to also plant some black berries. Just plant a few.

We started in 2004 planting peach, pear, plums trees and blackberry rooting.
By the way, this was a lot of hard work but hard work didn't hurt anyone, right. :O)
Looking back we see where we could have done some things better.
